ADHD & Executive Function Coaching

ADHD/Executive Function Coaching focuses on the skills needed to function in daily life activities as well as the skills needed to accomplish goals. While daily life demands differ depending on what stage of life you are in, the skills required of all of us are pretty much the same: planning, organizing, following through, starting tasks, and completing tasks. These skills are needed to be successful in school-which is why it's so important to improve the skills required to achieve better outcomes in school. ADHD/Executive Function coaching addresses a student's time management, attention, memory, and self control skills, with the goal of fostering increased independence.

What is the Process?

The coaching process involves helping the student identify a long-term goal and the intermediate steps required to meet that goal. I often meet with students for short  frequent  sessions through video conferencing. At every session, we Review the objectives the student had planned to accomplish, Evaluate how well the student accomplished the objectives and tweak what needs to be fixed, Anticipate what the student needs to accomplish that day (or that week), and make a Plan for how, when, and where those objectives will be accomplished. This plan will include a review of potential obstacles and how to respond, as well as the use of motivators and reminders. In addition to your student's self report of how he/she is meeting goals, I will be verifying (checking grades, Brightspace, etc.) his/her progress, often with the student in session. Students might misrepresent their progress for various reasons (e.g., not wanting to disappoint their coach, not checking their grades). The purpose of me verifying students' progress is to catch small problems before they turn into big problems. As your student accomplishes a goal, new goals are chosen, and are always student driven. The ultimate goal of ADHD coaching is for the student to internalize this process of goal setting and problem solving.
