Educational Therapy/Academic Coaching
Does your child study hard, yet those grades just do not reflect all his/her effort?
Figuring out why students struggle and helping them develop the tools and strategies they need to become successful is my passion! Educational therapy is the combination of therapeutic and educational strategies, individualized to a student's specific needs, with the goal of improving academic performance, restoring self-esteem, and increasing independence. Unlike tutoring, which focuses on what to learn, educational therapy focuses on how to learn.
Many kids who benefit from educational therapy need help with their study skills. They might study hours on end, but their efforts never seem to pay off. Teaching and practicing strategies like active versus passive studying will help these students learn how to study smarter, not harder.
Some children read an entire chapter, yet have no idea what they've just read. There can be different reasons why the student is having comprehension difficulties. Sometimes the origin is dyslexia-the ability to decode individual words is affected, making it difficult to string together enough words to understand a passage. Other times a student might not be able to create a mental image of what he/she is reading - a student cannot understand what he/she cannot picture. Educational therapy can help identify where the breakdown is and develop a variety of creative strategies to increase comprehension.
Writing difficulties are the most common learning disorder among those with ADHD. This is likely because writing requires so many executive functioning skills. From difficulty simply getting started (task initiation), to making careless grammatical errors, to having trouble generating ideas/elaborating, educational therapy has strategies and techniques to get the most reluctant writer unstuck and autonomously progressing.
